Organic shapes, japandi lines and neutral colors in the new collections introduced by some of the top Scandinavian companies.
From the Paris design week to the recently concluded Stockholm furniture fair, many companies have introduced their spring news, a preview of the new collections, interesting for understanding the direction of the furnishing style but also, simply, finding the right inspiration. In particular, Scandinavian companies have unveiled furniture and lights in which the shapes are organic, the corners rounded, the colors soft. The common thread is the japandi style, a perfect marriage between Japan and Scandinavia: it can be seen in the essentiality of the lines, in the minimal elegance and in the natural materials, all characteristics common to the two cultures that are geographically distant but very close in aesthetics.
&Tradition between past and present
The new &Tradition collection oscillates between icons of the past to be given new light and totally new projects entrusted to contemporary designers. The first category includes the X table by Hvidt & Mølgaard: designed in 1954 but never put into production, it was rediscovered by &Tradition in collaboration with the families of the two designers.
The second group includes the Gio ceiling lamp by Luca Nichetto, which pays homage to Gio Ponti but also to the Murano glass in which the chandelier is produced. Nichetto starts from the innovation of Gio Ponti who stripped the classic Murano chandelier of its frills to reduce it to the essential beauty of glass and its colors. The same designer is the author of Muno, a lounge chair with a footrest in five height variations for the backrest and armrests.
The Meantime collection, composed of armchairs, a two-seater sofa and a three-seater sofa, is designed by Anderssen & Voll. Designed for public and private contexts, it combines elegance and comfort. The beauty and tactility of wood is in the foreground in the Ita collection by the OEO studio: it mixes Japanese and Scandinavian style with sensitivity towards manufacturing and the enhancement of the material. It consists of a dining table in two sizes, benches and a coffee table, it travels in a package with minimal bulk and can be assembled with a single tool.
Light, glass and black & white for 101 Copenhagen
101 Copenhagen shows its affinity with Japanese style in its new collection with essential and welcoming lines at the same time.
The Reflect table lamp by Kristian Sofus Hansen & Tommy Hyldahl subverts the classic structure of light: the light source is contained in the base and directed upwards where a circular reflector diffuses it into space. By the same designers, the Maru suspended lamps are like domestic planets composed of two concentric rings of LEDs that can rotate on lateral pins and create customized light configurations.
Kristian Sofus Hansen & Tommy Hyldahl are also the authors of the Toe armchair with footrest and the Crown table: both characterized by rounded and generous shapes and refined materials.
Hay looks towards the warm season
Outdoor furniture and spring colors are at the core of the new Hay collection starting from an interesting re-edition of the X-Line chair designed by Niels Jørgen Haugesen at the end of the 70s and now offered in a contemporary and balanced choice of colors and finishes, suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
Traverse is the collection by Erwan Bouroullec designed to blend naturally with the landscape context and therefore in wood with a discreet aluminum structure. Bouroullec, together with his brother Ronan had already signed the outdoor collection Palissade which from this year is also available in the new Cord variant characterized by a hand-woven recycled polyester rope. Sylvain Willenz signs the Pyro coffee table with the top in enameled porcelain and the structure in opaque steel.
Muuto’s flexible and contract vision
Muuto takes care of workspaces by developing the Midst table by Studio Taf, in the two versions round and conference, with the possibility of an electrical socket in the center. Tables also suitable for hybrid domestic contexts that transform according to needs. The Fiber Lounge Chair by Iskos Berlin is also designed for hybrid spaces and is dedicated to relaxation: it is a swivel armchair with a steel base and a large backrest.
Wood and glass textures in Umage’s new products
Umage is a Scandinavian company with a refined and soft style, in the new collection the Chordis lamp by Jonas Søndergaard stands out: a glass cloud that encloses a weave of brass wires.
Søren Ravn Christensen designs the ceiling and wall lamp, Lemon Squeeze, with evocative and nostalgic lines that produce a light and delicate light.
Wood is the protagonist in A conversation piece chairs by designer Anders Klem who follows the armchairs from the same series. The solid oak and veneer seem sculpted to create the jointless structure and the wide backrest that follows the line of the shoulders. Finally, the Treasure dresser is a chest of drawers designed for the bedroom with “secret” side doors in which to store small accessories.
