From showrooms in the city to the increasingly dynamic fair, passing through archive exhibitions and crossover events.
From 8 to 13 April, Milan will host the most important design week in the world: on the one hand, the fair, on the other, the program of events and installations in the city, in classic locations, such as the showrooms of the brands in the sector, and new ones.
Over the years, Salone and Fuorisalone have each developed their own identity, becoming complementary and dynamic. The first more oriented towards the professional public, the second more atmospheric but not devoid of concreteness.
At the center is always living, today approached by the public with greater awareness and attention not only to style but also to quality and sustainability. The calendar of events begins well before the fair and ends after, so here is a selection of interesting initiatives, useful for understanding the diversity of contexts that increasingly characterizes the Milanese design week.
The Salone del Mobile between business and atmosphere
The protagonists of the 63rd edition of the Salone del Mobile are the 2,100 exhibitors from over 37 different countries. Numbers that convey the size, richness and diversity of styles that will be in front of the eyes of visitors to a fair that has never lost its shine.
A deep immersion in design made possible not only by the companies’ installations but also by the special events inside and outside the fair. In the city there will be the installation by Robert Wilson, Mother, at the Museo della Pietà Rondanini – Castello Sforzesco but also Library of Light by British artist Es Devlin, in the Cortile d’Onore of the Pinacoteca di Brera. At the fair the long-awaited installation dedicated to the theme of waiting by Oscar-winning director Paolo Sorrentino, supported by set designer Margherita Palli and the sound fabric of Max Casacci.
But also an intervention dedicated to the contract, a very lively sector at the moment, with Pierre-Yves Rochon and his idea of hotellerie: Villa Héritage, a tribute to Luchino Visconti’s Venice and the notes of Gustav Mahler.
With these 4 special initiatives the Salone creates a cultural bridge with the city and the public and acquires further depth and intensity. Also worth following are the meetings of the Design Kiosk in Piazza della Scala: an ideal newsstand designed by DWA Studio that will host presentations of magazines, books and design talks.
The Fuorisalone of showrooms and collaborations
If the fair is not just business, the events in the city are not just entertainment: the showrooms of the most prestigious brands become privileged places for close encounters with companies and designers. For example, Flos will host an installation dedicated to Tobia Scarpa, on his 90th anniversary, with some of his extraordinary lamps in its flagship store.
The same brand, in the professional space, will host the installation SuperWire by Formafantasma, also authors of InTransit for Prada Frames, during which it will be possible to visit the Arlecchino train, designed by Gio Ponti and Giulio Minoletti in 1950 and restored by the Fondazione FS Italiane.
LaCividina opens the doors of its showroom to present its new collections: the Acamante collections by Elisa Ossino and Lisse by Sabine Marcelis.
G.T. Design opens the doors of its La Cabina space but also promotes an off-salone dedicated to theater, together with Plinio il Giovane, with Fringe Design in Scena: shows every evening from April 7 to 12.
On the subject of collaborations between brands, the partnership between Paola Paronetto and Tapis Rouge is also interesting, in whose showroom the designer’s ceramic creations will be on display alongside the weaves and textures of the company’s carpets. The Zanellato Bertotto studio redesigns the interiors of the Brera Design Apartment around the theme Orizzonti: a synthesis of trends and new ideas for furniture and decoration.
The anniversary of Superstudio Più
Among the events not to be missed is also the Unforgettable exhibition that celebrates the 25th anniversary of Superstudio Più: curated by Giulio Cappellini and Leonardo Talarico, it is an excursus of the most iconic design pieces of the last 25 years by Acerbis, Alcantara®, Alessi, Boffi, CAPPELLINI, Cassina, Flaminia, De Padova, HENRYTIMI, Icone Luce, MDF Italia, Moroso, Living Divani, POLIFORM, Poltrona Frau, Technogym, Trussardi Casa, Zanotta.
